My bacteriology research has focused primarily on the important salmonid fish pathogen, Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD). Areas of emphasis of the BKD research program have included improvement of sampling and testing methods for pathogen detection (including nonlethal sampling methods), understanding BKD biology and pathogenesis, and development of methods for disease prevention and control. My histopathology research has included studies of skin injury and healing in salmonids, and collaborative studies of infectious and noninfectious diseases in a variety of finfish species.
