Deniz Gökalp obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation research was supported by a Summer Research Fellowship and a Dissertation Field Research Grant by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Upon graduation, she was awarded a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the Middle Eastern Studies Program at the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse University in New York. Dr. Gökalp’s research interests include political and comparative historical sociology more specifically, issues of political violence, militarism, neoliberalism, democracy, social movements, women and war, and population displacement and refugees in the Middle East and North Africa. She has taught classes on political violence, globalization, democracy and Middle Eastern politics. Her work has been published in several academic journals including The Middle East Journal and Women’s Studies International Forum. Deniz has been leading a research collaboration project between the London School of Economics and the American University in Dubai since December 2013. The project focuses on the role of international actors in state-building and institutional reconstruction in Iraq. She travelled to Iraq in 2014 to conduct field research based in Erbil and Sulaimaniyah. Focusing on Iraq and the Levant, her current research deals with issues of gender hierarchies, social collapse, violence against civilians, displacement and children growing up in conflict zones. She has special interest in photography and social documentary.
