Dr. Coats is Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at the Cullen Eye Institute and Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of Ophthalmology at Texas Children’s Hospital. His medical degree was received from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1987, followed by internship in South Carolina, and residency at the Storm Eye Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Coats has also published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in various medical journals, has written numerous book chapters, and lectured nationally and internationally on the topics of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology. He is co-author of the textbook Strabismus Surgery and its Complications. His principle research is in the areas of retinopathy of prematurity and strabismus.
