Prof. Franklin joined AUD as an assistant professor in January, 2017.   He is a founder and principal of the Indianapolis-based firm ‘Domain Architecture’.  As a practicing architect since 1996, Prof. Franklin’s projects include the 155-unit ’16 Park’ Apartments on the northern edge of downtown Indianapolis (2012); The new ground transportation center at Indianapolis International Airport (2008), as associate architect for the Indiana Convention Center expansion (with ‘Ratio Architects’, 2009) and for the new University of Louisville arena (with ‘Populous’).  Prior to self-practice, Prof. Franklin served as a site planner, architect, and construction monitor for Simon Property Group in New Jersey and Indianapolis.   As a university instructor, Prof. Franklin has taught the courses ‘History of Architecture’; ‘Mechanical and Electrical Systems for Buildings’, ‘Construction Specifications & Contract Documents’; ‘Topics in Urban Design’ (graduate colloquium); and 2nd/4th-year Architecture Design Studios.  He has served as a design studio juror at The University of Illinois, Ball State University, and Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture in Versailles, France (ENSAV).   In 2010 he was selected as the Francis J. Plym Traveling Fellow in Architecture at The University of Illinois, during which he conducted self-directed research across Europe and North Africa.  Topics included ‘The relational application of classical principals of scale and proportion to modern/modernist architecture’, as a response to a belief that built architecture should be of its own time while employing devices that when properly conceived can result in an enhanced degree of timelessness.   A licensed architect in the U.S. states of Illinois and Indiana, Prof. Franklin served a mayoral appointment to the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, and as a board member for the Indiana and Indianapolis chapters of the American Institute of Architects.  He is a past trustee of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.   Prof. Franklin enjoys travel, fiction writing, politics, and cities.
