Biography

Dr. David Connell gained a 1st class Honours degree in Physiology from the University of Cambridge before qualifying in Medicine from the University of Oxford in 2004. He undertook house jobs in Oxford and Reading before senior house officer posts in London at Northwick Park Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital. He was awarded an NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College in 2008 and spent the following two and a half years in early specialist training in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine at St. Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospitals. During this time David developed a clinical research forum for respiratory infections at St. Mary’s, focusing on answering basic clinical questions in tuberculosis infection and disease. He was then awarded an MRC-funded clinical research training fellowship in the Tuberculosis Research Unit at the National Heart and Lung Institute, during which time he undertook a PhD in Professor Ajit Lalvani’s group examining the role of Vitamin D in shaping both in vivo and in vitro outcomes following exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He completed his higher specialist clinical training at Northwick Park Hospital, the Royal Brompton Hospital, and the Royal Free Hospital, attaining a CCT in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine in February 2017.
