DAVID CARAMELLI is Director of the Department of Biology and Professor of Anthropology. He graduated in Natural Sciences and in Nature and Environmental Science (Curriculum of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences); In 2001 he holds the PhD in Anthropological Sciences with a Thesis titled "Genetic Characterization of the Etruscan population". Between 1998 and 2001, she has spent periods abroad (University of Gottingen, Germany, University of Cambridge UK) where she has learned about technologies for the study of ancient / degraded DNA. In 2001 he was awarded research at the Department of Animal and Genetics at the University of Florence and in 2004 won the competition as a Researcher at SSF BIO / 08 Anthropology at the Faculty of SMFN of ' University of Florence; In 2005 he has been qualified as Associate Professor (SSD BIO / 08 Anthropology) at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Bari. Since 2005 he has held the Molecular Anthropology Course for the Natural Sciences and CdL Sciences for Cultural Heritage and Bioinformatics course of the ancient genomes for the Biological Sciences CD at the Faculty of Science of the University of Florence and since 2007 of the Human and Educational Ecology Course of the Sciences of Nature and Man for the CdL Primary Education Sciences at the Faculty of Education Sciences . Since 2007 he has been Master of Second Level Technologies and Applications for Scientific Investigations and from 2004 to 2008 he has been a member of the Master of Science degree in Biological Anthropology of the Mediterranean Region. From 2005 to 2009 he was a member of the Doctoral School of PhD in Anthropological Sciences and since 2009 is a member of the College of PhD students in Animal Ecology, Ethology and Anthropology. He is a consultant at the RIS of the Carabinieri of Rome where he has established a formal convection for the development of research projects related to the study and the genetic characterization of profiles in highly degraded biological finds. He is coordinator of several research projects among which the national research program (PRIN 2006, PRIN 2008, FIRB2009). He is author of more than 150 publications (H index 25), some of which are cited among the most important researches of 2003 and 2007. He has been sent to numerous congresses and scientific events and in television programs as a invited speaker. His research has been quoted and reported in numerous specialized and divulging press newspapers. In 2007 he was Guest Editor of BMC Evolutionary Biology. He is Associate Editor of BMC Genetics and is part of the Editorial Board of PLoS ONE. He is a Referee of international journals including PNAS, Tree, Science, Human genetics, Annals of Human Genetics, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Genetic Research, BMC Evolutionary Biology,
The researches that I develop with my collaborators in the Molecular / Paleogenetic Anthropology Laboratory of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, relate mainly to ancient or degraded DNA analysis recruited by archeological and / or paleontological or not so ancient findings but subject to degradative phenomena.
