David came to Richmond, Virginia in 1991 to fulfill a scholarship service obligation at the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1993, he then accepted a position as the Sports & Prosthetic Rehabilitation Specialist for Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital. After leaving this position, he started the Stepping Back to Life Project and soon after accepted a position as the Program Director for the home health agency, A.T. Home Care. As a volunteer David has offered his services as a trainer working with both able bodied and disabled elite athletes. In 1996 he was named to the United States Olympic Committee Medical Team for the Atlanta Paralympic Games. He also coached with the National Volleyball Team under the guide of Disabled Sports USA. Presently he serves as the rehabilitation coordinator of the International “Walking Free” program with Physicians for Peace. This is a program that David helped to found and continues to develop. Mr. Lawrence founded Lawrence Rehabilitation Specialists, Inc. in 2000 to enhance the quality of care and education available for the treatment of patients with Gait pathologies. David is an internationally renowned professional educator offering courses on knee, hip and foot pathologies. His courses also cover the comprehensive rehabilitation following limb amputation and disabled sports and recreation. In addition to his professional courses, he is adjunct faculty for Old Dominion University and a guest lecturer for Virginia Commonwealth University. David has now opened the first of its kind "Gait Center" with a specially trained staff to more directly meet the needs of individuals that have suffered injury or disease that has limited their ability to walk confidently.
