Prof. Topaz is an applied mathematician working in dynamical systems and modeling, with a focus on patterns in nature (especially biological swarms). Most often, he teaches applied calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, and mathematical modeling, and he received Macalester’s Jack and Marty Rossmann Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010. Prof. Topaz’s National Science Foundation supported research program is centered on collaboration with students in the XMAC Lab (eXperiment, Modeling, Analysis, and Computation). He loves to spend his spare time reading, listening to political news, practicing yoga, practicing French, and hanging out with his husband and daughter.
