Biography

Cengiz Kallek graduated from BoÄŸaziçi University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Business Management in 1982. While working in the General Directorate of the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam as copy-editor and proofreader, he completed a postgraduate degree in Islamic law (1989) and a doctorate in economic history (1994) at the Social Sciences Institute of Marmara University. From 1994 to 1996 he held posts as assistant associate professor in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the International Islamic University (IIUM) in Malaysia, and also from 1997 to 1999 as full professor at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC). Kallek worked at the TDV Center for Islamic Studies, teaching some courses at Fatih University until he joined the staff at Istanbul Åžehir University (2010). In addition to his postgraduate thesis (The State and Market in the period of the Prophet, Istanbul: Foundation for Sciences and Arts, 1992) and his doctorate thesis (The Relationship between the Administration and the Market during the Asr-ı Saâdet, Istanbul: Iz Publishing, 1997), his book entitled History of Islamic Economic Thought: Haraj and Emval Records (Istanbul: Klasik Publishing, 2004) has been published, as well as over a hundred and fifty articles, both in Turkish and English, in the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam.
