Born in the village of Kıyıkışlacık in Milas in 1946, Prof. Çakar completed his schooling at MuÄŸla Turgut Reis High School before starting his degree in biology at Ä°stanbul University in 1964. After graduating in 1968 he became an assistant in physiology and biophysics at CerrahpaÅŸa Medical School and completed his doctorate with distinction in 1972, becoming a Doctor of Medical Science. From November 1975 to August 1976 he spent 9 months working alongside Prof. Eric Neil in the department of physiology at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University College London. In 1977 he became associate professor of physiology and in September 1988 he was awarded a full professorship. For 23 years and 9 months Prof. Çakar was the Chair of Physiology at Ä°stanbul University CerrahpaÅŸa Medical School. During this time he was twice appointed Vice Dean of CerrahpaÅŸa Medical School, responsible for its academic affairs, first from 1992 to 1994, and again from 1999 to 2002. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Head of Ä°stanbul University Vocational School of Health Services and in September 2013 he finally retired from Ä°stanbul University CerrahpaÅŸa Medical School after 45 years of service. In April 2014 he was appointed Chair of Physiology at SANKO University Medical School. Apart from lecturing in physiology, in both Turkish and English, at Ä°stanbul University CerrahpaÅŸa Medical School, he also taught physiology at UludaÄŸ University Medical School, Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Ankara University Antalya Medical School and Ä°stanbul University School of Physical Education and Sports. Prof. Çakar, whose special areas of interest include the nervous system, breathing regulation and the physiology of exercise, has presented his scientific work at more than 65 conferences including a total of 24 international events. Apart from his 87 original research papers and publications, he has also published three text books; “A Practical Handbook of Physiology” and the 560-page “Textbook of Physiology Vol.1”, both written with his tutor, Prof. Meliha TerzioÄŸlu, and “Human Factors in Design”.
