Biography

Dr Maharaj is professor of pharmacology at the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. He has contributed substantially to research in the black community in the developing world. His MD thesis was on "Some aspects of liver disease in black patients". Papers on this subject (sample variability of liver biopsy) published in the Lancet have been quoted 67 times. His PhD thesis on "Some aspects of the prevention of both recurrences of rheumatic fever and infective endocarditis" has led to guidelines for the prevention of both recurrences of rheumatic fever and infective endocarditis which may be easily implemented in developing countries. His main research interest, cardiovascular disease, includes 64 papers, 4 chapters in books, and 46 presentations both international and national, on hypertension, heart failure in blacks in pregnancy and are published in major international journals. He is a member of the Medicine Control Council and the National Essential Drug List Committee of South Africa. He has ably presented on behalf of the Nelson R.Mandela Faculty of Medicine, University of Natal, the faculty's submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa. He is a teacher in clinical pharmacology and clinical medicine since 1982 and has played an active role in curriculum reform in the medical school. Dr Maharaj is currently actively involved in the practice of the art of True Light and the principles of the universe (Sukyo Mahikari) as a means of improving the quality of life and well-being of people. His understanding of human spirituality and the concept of understanding the inner self is legion. This ability has allowed him not only to be a collosus in the academia but to be a good caring human being. It is also rumoured that Prof.Maharaj is the only known Maharaj of Brahmin stock who can bless people in Japanese.
