Basil Pillay is the HOD of the Department of Behavioural Medicine and Chief Clinical Psychologist for the Hospital Services in KwaZulu-Natal. He a member several national and international bodies as well as represents his discipline on national and international bodies and serves on several scientific committees. He is a Past President of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) having served his term of presidency during the years 2006 - 2009. He is currently Executive Member of Professional Board for Psychology, Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and Chair of the Examinations Committee. Basil Pillay is a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) His interests include: Stress and trauma, Clinical Neuropsychology and Forensic Psychology. He currently has several PhD students researching in these areas. He is PI of Project CARE - a lead study in the Department that investigates risk and resilience in South African youth. The study is a collaborative project with the Department of Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, USA and examines the associations between cumulative risk and physiological outcomes, as well as examining individual, familial, and environmental factors associated with resilience.
