Biography

Ayman Elezabi is an associate professor and chair of the Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECNG) department at The American University in Cairo. His work falls primarily in the field of physical layer communications with an emphasis on wireless communications. Elezabi obtained his PhD in electrical and computer engineering with a graduate minor in computer science from North Carolina State University in 2000. He then joined BOPS Inc., NC, USA, a startup at the time, for about two years where he was responsible for implementing and benchmarking several wireline and wireless communication standards on multi-processing element DSP cores, and was part of the design team for an SOC implementation of 802.11a. Elezabi’s industry experience includes work at the IBM Cairo Scientific Center in Egypt, and at Analog Devices and Ericsson in the U.S. He also delivered training and consultations independently in the area of wireless communications for several companies in the U.S. and Egypt. Elezabi was an early contributor and principal consultant in one other startup, now Wasiela Inc. He has a combined industry experience of about 15 years. Elezabi has taught at several universities in Egypt and internationally. Since Fall 2003, he has been with The American University in Cairo. Elezabi was the founding graduate director of the MS and PhD programs in the ECNG department. Elezabi’s current research interests are signal processing for wireless communications, including implementation issues, cognitive radio with applications to rural connectivity, smart grids, and, more recently, he is exploring machine learning applications in healthcare and precision medicine. Elezabi’s work often includes industry involvement.
