Ayari obtained an undergraduate degree in Physics from UNAM and a PhD in Mathematical Biology from the Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London and the Department of Biology, University of Bath. The objective of her PhD project was to use mathematical models to study cooperative behaviour in microbial populations. After obtaining her degree, Ayari was invited to visit the Laboratory of Experimental Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology to validate the predictions of the theoretical model using a microbial experimental system. Then she did a postdoc at Biosciences, University of Exeter, collaborating in an interdisciplinary project whose objective was to study the effect of multidrug combinations of antibiotics with the goal of designing optimal sequential strategies. Since August 2014 she is a member of the Systems and Synthetic Biology Laboratory of the Center for Genomics Sciences at UNAM, where she combines mathematical modelling with experimental evolution to study the effect of temporal and spatial structure in the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of bacterial populations.
