Amr Hamzawy is an Egyptian political scientist who previously taught at the Free University of Berlin, from which he received his PhD. Hamzawy has a deep knowledge of Middle East politics and specific expertise on democratization and reform processes in the region. His most recent book, Getting to Pluralism: Political Actors in the Arab World, co-edited with Marina Ottaway, was published in 2009. Hamzawy regularly contributes articles in Arabic to various academic journals. He also writes a daily column for the Egyptian independent daily newspaper, Al-Shorouk. Hamzawy is currently a professor at AUC's Department of Public Policy and Administration. He is also professor of political science at Cairo University, a member of the National Council of Human Rights in Egypt and founder of Masr Elhureyya (Free Egypt) political party. In addition, he was a member of Egypt's first post-revolution People’s Assembly. His books include Getting to Pluralism: Political Actors in the Arab World, co-authored with Marina Ottaway (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2009); Human Rights in the Arab World: Independent Voices, co-authored with Anthony Chase (University of Pennsylvania Press) and Zeitgenoessisches Arabisches Denken -Kontinuitaet und Wandel (Verlag des Deutschen Orient-Instituts, 2005). His research papers include "Between Government and Opposition: The Case of the Yemeni Congregation for Reform" (Carnegie Paper, 2009), "Islamists in Politics" (co-authored with Marina Ottaway, Carnegie Paper, 2009) and "Participation and its Discontents: The Case of the Moroccan Party for Justice and Development" (Carnegie Paper, 2008). Hamzawy specializes in democracy, Islamism, social unrest, political reform and the Middle East. Hamzawy received his PhD from the Free University of Berlin, MA from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague; and BSc from Cairo University.
