Biography

Graduated in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1963), PhD in Chemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1967) and Post-Doctorate in NMR at the University of Sheffield, England (1968). He has experience in the field of Chemistry, with emphasis on Chemistry of Natural Products, and has worked in the Chemistry Department, ICEx / UFMG, mainly on the following topics: microbial transformation of natural products, synthesis of naphthoquinones, chemistry and trypanosomicidal activity of plant species Of the families Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Asteraceae and Bignoniaceae. From 1991, he began to hold the position of Full Professor, at Faculdade Farmácia / UFMG, in the field of Pharmacognosy / Phytochemistry. She is Emeritus Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Acting as Teacher and Advisor of the Postgraduate Course in Pharmaceutical Sciences and recently became a Senior National Visiting Researcher (PVNS) in the Graduate Course in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy / UFPA, Belém. His main interests , Are currently the Chemotaxonomy of plant species of the family Bignoniaceae and the research of plants of traditional use for the treatment of malaria, leishmaniasis and viral infections with the objective of evaluating biological activities, isolating active substances and developing standardized extracts for preclinical studies . He is a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. His main interests today are the Chemiotaxonomy of plant species of the Bignoniaceae family and the investigation of plants of traditional use for the treatment of malaria, leishmaniasis and viral infections with the objective of evaluating biological activities, isolating active substances and developing standardized extracts for studies Preclinical studies. He is a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
