Biography

 EXPERIENCE: Appointed Independent Non-Executive Director in April 2013 and Chairman of the Ethics & Compliance Committee in August 2014 In 1983, he joined the Division of Cancer Treatment at the National Cancer Institute and went on to become the Associate Director of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program. Michael was most recently CEO of City of Hope, in California and also served as Director of the institution’s cancer centre and held the Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair. He was formerly Senior VP of research, medical and public policy for Pharmacia Corporation and also Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has served on a number of Boards in a Non-Executive capacity, including Rite Aid Corporation. Currently, Michael is a NED of Celgene Corporation, NED of MannKind Corporation and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. Michael understands the fundamental importance of research, which is part of Smith & Nephew’s value creation process. His varied career in both the public and private healthcare sector has given him a deep insight and a highly respected career. In particular his work with the FDA and knowledge relating to US compliance provides the skillset required to Chair the Ethics & Compliance Committee. UNIVERSITY: Michael graduated with a BA, magna cum laude from Tulane University and a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University and the National Cancer Institute, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology
