Mark E. Murphy, M.D., a Savannah native and the son of longtime Savannah surgeon H.J. “Jack” Murphy, M.D., founded the Center for Digestive and Liver Health along with Dr. Rydzak in 1994. His principal clinical interests are in Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, liver disease, gastrointestinal malignancy and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. A 1984 First Honor Graduate (B.S. Zoology) of the University of Georgia with a perfect 4.0 GPA in the U.Ga. Honors Program, Dr. Murphy was recognized with the Dean Tate Phi Beta Kappa Award as the Outstanding Senior Student at the University. He received his M.D. with Honors from the Medical College of Georgia in 1988, where he was the recipient of a national Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship, the Alumni Scholarship and the Merck Manual Award and was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honorary. Dr. Murphy completed Internal Medicine residency at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was chosen for the Lee Fordham Award as the Outstanding Teaching Resident. He then continued his postgraduate education as a Digestive Disease Fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill before returning to Savannah to begin private practice. As an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Dr. Murphy has been elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterology Association, was recognized with a national postgraduate fellowship with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), and has served as President of the Georgia Medical Society. He has been selected to America’s Top Doctors every year for over a decade and has been chosen as Savannah’s Best Gastroenterologist five years in a row by the readers of Savannah magazine. Dr. Murphy has been a member of the Board of Directors of Memorial Health University Medical Center for over ten years. He also serves on the Boards of the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and was recently chosen as President of the Savannah Book Festival. Dr. Murphy has authored book chapters in textbooks of Gastroenterology (Yamada) and Internal Medicine (Noble) and has also written chapters in the E-Medicine online medical textbook. Dr. Murphy also has a lifelong interest in creative writing. Since 2010, Dr. Murphy has written over 200 Op-Ed columns for the Savannah Morning News, and was recently selected as the Runner-up for Best Columnist in Savannah by the readers of Savannah magazine. Dr. Murphy has been a student at the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival and has published several short stories and two critically-acclaimed novels (The Shadow Man, 2012; The Curse of the Thrax, 2014). The Curse of the Thrax was recently chosen as a First Place Award winner in the Dante Rossetti Young Adult Fiction competition.
