Biography

 ·         Dr Lai Kah Weng is an orthopaedic specialist practising at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. His specialty clinical interests are arthroscopic joint and ligament reconstruction surgery, knee and hip replacement surgery and orthopaedic trauma surgery. ·         Dr Lai attended medical school at the National University of Singapore and thereafter completed a 6-year residency programme in Aviation Medicine with the Republic of Singapore Airforce (RSAF). He was the first Singaporean to be awarded the prestigious Stewart Memorial Prize in 2002 for graduating top of his Diploma in Aviation Medicine course in London. During his time as a flight surgeon in the RSAF, he commanded a medical squadron, was deployed to East Timor on a United Nations peace keeping mission, and flew in various fighter jets and helicopters. ·         Upon commencing his orthopaedic specialist training in 2006, Dr Lai rotated among Singapore’s biggest restructured hospitals and accrued much experience learning from local orthopaedic experts. In 2012, Dr Lai completed his training and obtained his fellowship degree from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, before being fully registered as an orthopaedic specialist with the Singapore Medical Council. ·         In 2013, he joined the National University Hospital (NUH) and spent time overseas attending fellowships in the region while establishing his orthopaedic practice. This culminated in a full-time orthopaedic knee arthroscopy, arthroplasty and trauma fellowship in 2014 with Dr Myles Coolican, Dr David Parker and Dr Brett Fritsch at the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute in Royal North Shore Hospital. ·         During Dr Lai’s time as an orthopaedic consultant in the sports and hip/knee divisions in NUH, his surgical interests and repertoire included computer-navigated knee and hip joint replacement, minimally invasive (arthroscopic/key-hole) ligament reconstruction and cartilage resurfacing and regeneration. ·         Dr Lai has presented at various international orthopaedic meetings, giving numerous talks to the public and fellow healthcare providers, and was a faculty member in the postgraduate orthopaedic residency training programme in NUH. Dr Lai is also a full member of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and currently helps out as a co-chairman of the scientific committee at its Annual Scientific Meeting. ·         Dr Lai has been an avid sportsman since primary school. Throughout his years in school and university, he has participated in swimming, athletics, volleyball, badminton, table-tennis, hockey, soccer and basketball. However, the sport which is he well-known for is rugby, and he has represented Singapore 10 times in international test rugby matches. He currently volunteers as the Medical Director on the board of the Singapore Rugby Union. He continues to enjoy non-contact rugby every Sunday and takes part regularly in competitive international touch rugby tournaments.
