Biography

 ·         Dr Kenneth Chan is a respiratory physician practising at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore. He has special interests in bronchoscopy (examination of airways), smoking cessation and intensive care medicine. ·         Dr Chan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1995. He then became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of the United Kingdom in 1999 and obtained his Master of Medicine in internal medicine. He did his specialty training in respiratory and critical care medicine at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). ·         In 2004, Dr Chan was awarded a Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship to pursue a clinical fellowship in critical care medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Chan also holds the European Diploma in Intensive Care. ·         At SGH, Dr Chan directed the inpatient smoking cessation programme and the outpatient Smoking Cessation Clinic. He was the president of the Singapore Thoracic Society from 2005 – 2006 and an executive committee member until 2008. He also chaired the Ministry of Health Clinical Practice Guidelines for Smoking Cessation from 2010 – 2011. Dr Chan is currently the president of the Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Singapore. ·         With a passion for teaching, Dr Chan held dual appointments as an adjunct assistant professor of medicine at the Duke-NUS Medical School and a clinical lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He has a special interest in evidence-based medicine and has directed and conducted several courses in this area. ·         Dr Chan's research interests include intensive care, mechanical ventilation and acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is a severe fluid build-up in the lungs. He has published in international journals such as CHEST and Critical Care Medicine, and has been regularly invited to speak regionally in these fields. ·         Dr Chan was the scientific chair for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Congress in Bronchology in 2007. In addition, he was the scientific chair for the World Congress on Tobacco and Health, a leading global smoking cessation meeting, in 2012.
