Biography

Tasneem Azad is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Disputes and Investigations in London, co-leading the European Economics practice.She brings more than 16 years of experience providing economic expert advice to clients in competition (antitrust) cases and regulatory investigations and litigation.Ms. Azad focuses on applying competition and regulatory economics, particularly to high-profile disputes and market investigations. She has worked with both public- and private-sector clients across a range of industries, including fixed and mobile telecom, media, insurance, financial services, postal services and other network industries. Ms. Azad is currently listed as a world leading practitioner within the 2014 Euromoney Expert Guide on competition and antitrust.Before A&M, she spent almost nine years with DotEcon Ltd., a London-based economics consultancy, most recently serving as Director of Competition and Regulation. There, she advised clients through high-profile market inquiries and competition cases before authorities such as the U.K. Office of Fair Trading, the U.K. Competition Commission (CC), the U.K. Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) and the European Commission (EC). She also advised clients on regulated industries, including retail price controls, wholesale access charge controls, and structural remedies imposed by economic regulators.Notable engagements include: supporting MBNA Europe Bank (now part of Bank of America) during a CC investigation into payment protection insurance; advising British Telecom regarding the appeals by U.K. mobile operators of the industry regulator; Ofcom’s, decision on mobile termination rates, advising a leading media client on the CAT inquiry into Sky’s provision of certain Pay TV channels; and assisting a regulatory authority in designing retail controls that apply to regulated water companies. Earlier, Ms. Azad spent eight years within the U.K. Government Economic Service, serving in such departments as the Department of Trade and Industry, the Low Pay Commission, Her Majesty’s Cabinet Office, the OFT and the Postal Services Commission.At the postal authority, she served as Deputy Director of Competition and Regulation and was instrumental in the liberalization of the postal services market and the formulation of the first regulatory price control imposed on Royal Mail. There, she was also seconded to the EC as an expert on competition and regulatory matters, and undertook the related accession reviews of newly acceding member states including, among others, the Republic of Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.Ms. Azad earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in economics and philosophy, both from the London School of Economics. She also completed a master’s level course in industrial economics, again from the London School of Economics.
