Prof. Stanislaw Karpinski was born in Poznan, Poland and earned BS and M.Sc. in biochemistry and plant molecular biology from the Poznan University of Agriculture in 1984. From 1981 to 1989 he was active pro-democratic and underground “Solidarnosc” activist, in 1983 was a political prisoner, and until 1989 was invigilated by the former Polish security militia (SB). In 1988 he migrated to Sweden and in 1994 obtain Ph.D. from the Swedish University of Agriculture in Umea. From 1995 to 1997 was a postdoctoral fellow in John Innes Centre in Norwich, U.K. In 1997 returned to Sweden and in 1999 was employed as associate professor in the Department of Botany at Stockholm University. In 2004 was promoted by the Stockholm University vice-President to the full professor in molecular plant physiology. In 2008 was awarded by the Polish Science Foundation with the Welcome programme and returned to Poland and is presently employed as professor in plant biotechnology in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. In 25th of September 2009 the President of the Republic of Poland awarded Karpinski the highest Professor title for the outstanding achievements in biology. In January 2012 Karpinski was called by the Prime Minister for Secretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and was dismissed in June, 2012.
