Dr. Richard P. Hershberger was appointed Chief Academic Officer at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 2011. Prior to coming to RPCI, Dr. Hershberger held a variety of positions in higher education and educational management. Dr. Hershberger was Chair of the Division of National Sciences and Mathematics at Carlow University, and was on the faculty at California University of Pennsylvania. He has taught courses in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, and elementary science teaching. As Outreach Coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Hershberger developed biotechnology curricular modules for high school classrooms, managed the Pitt Kit equipment loan program, and conducted teacher professional development workshops. As the Biomedical Network Manager at the Pittsburgh Technology Council, he worked with the region’s biotechnology, medical device, and bioinformatics companies on informational event programming in the areas of workforce development, regulatory affairs, and entrepreneurship. There he also launched a workforce development project involving industry partners in the design of an integrated biotechnology curriculum spanning high school, community college, and university programs. Dr. Hershberger’s previous laboratory research involved recombinant DNA, molecular and cell biology, immunology and protein chromatography methods to clone genes, study RNA splicing, and express and purify plant virus proteins. He has written grants, laboratory manuals, and curricula for university science departments, and conducted pedagogical research on a competency-based grading system. Dr. Hershberger received his BA in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University, earned his PhD in molecular biology from Case Western Reserve University, and did his post-doctoral training at the University of Wisconsin. He received an MBA in 2003 from the University of Pittsburgh.
