Mike Roman is 3M’s chief operating officer and executive vice president. In this role, he has direct responsibility for 3M’s five business groups, along with the company’s international operations. Mike’s 29 years in a variety of roles with 3M have taken him across the United States and across the globe to Europe and Asia. He began as a senior design engineer with 3M’s Software and Electronics Resource Center in 1988, after five years with the Hughes Aircraft Company. He soon joined 3M Intelligent Transportation Systems as a laboratory manager and, later, business director. In 2001, Mike traveled to Belgium, where he spent the next two years as the European business unit director for the 3M Safety and Security Systems Division. Mike returned to the United States in 2003 and successfully built a Six Sigma organization for the Safety, Security and Protection Services Business Center. He was soon off to Asia to become president and managing director of 3M Korea. He remained in Korea until 2009, ending his time there as the Asia Pacific vice president for the 3M Optical Systems Division. Over the next few years, Mike launched the 3M Renewable Energy Division and led the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division. He later served as 3M’s senior vice president for Business Development, where he was instrumental in establishing the company’s future strategic roadmap.
