Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen joined Novo Nordisk in 1991 as head of Growth Hormone Research. Following that he directed Diabetes R&D and Global Drug Discovery, and in November 2000 he was appointed executive vice president and chief science officer. In this role, he is responsible for global drug and device research, development, medical affairs, regulatory and safety within Novo Nordisk. Professor Thomsen has chaired Danish Research Council programmes within endocrinology, and has served as president of the National Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV), Denmark. Today, he serves as chairman of the board of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is also a member of the editorial boards of international, peer-reviewed journals. Professor Thomsen has a DVM from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (now the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen), Denmark, from 1986, where he also obtained a PhD in 1989 and a DSc in 1991, and has served as adjunct professor of pharmacology since 2000.
