Leonhard holds LLB and LLM degrees from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD degree within the interdisciplinary ‘EXACT’ programme on EU External Relations at the Universities of Cologne and of Edinburgh, focusing on the external dimension of EU migration policy. From 2014 till 2016 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CEPS and Maastricht University within the 'TRANSMIC' project on transnational migration, focusing in particular on policy making through funding in the EU external migration policy. In the past he also worked as an assistant for an EU project in Addis Ababa, as a guest researcher and lecturer at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest and as a research and teaching assistant on legal research methodology at the University of Leuven.
