Biography

 As Executive Vice President of Clinical Research, Gilead Sciences, Inc., Dr McHutchison is responsible for development programs in liver diseases, haematology, oncology, inflammatory and respiratory diseases. He previously served as Senior Vice President, Liver Disease Therapeutics at Gilead. Prior to this, Dr McHutchison held the positions of Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Duke University Medical Center; Associate Director, Duke Clinical Research Institute and Co-Director, the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Award. He has led clinical trials of first generation HCV protease inhibitors, and studies defining  IL-28B polymorphisms' role in HCV treatment responsiveness – one of the most powerful pharmacogenetic discoveries to date.  Previously, Dr McHutchison spent nearly 10 years at Scripps Clinic, most recently as Medical Director, Liver Transplantation. He has also held an Assistant Professorship in Medicine at the University of Southern California. Dr McHutchison holds a medical degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and trained in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
