Biography

Ludwig Cancer Research is a global community of leading scientists pursuing innovative ways to prevent and control cancer. From basic research to clinical trials, in individual laboratories or as part of international teams, our researchers are tackling the hardest questions, spotting the connections and the possibilities. At Ludwig, we test our work against the one measure that matters — improving human health. Research Intrest

Initially trained as an MD, I began basic research under the guidance of Jacques Van Snick, who just identified IL-6 on the basis of its growth factor activity for plasmacytomas and hybridomas. My research is focused on the characterization of cytokine activities using a multidisciplinary approach extending from molecular characterization of signal transduction and gene regulation pathways to in vivo studies of inflammatory and immune responses in transgenic and gene-targeted mice. We have a particular interest in the biology of Interleukin-9 (IL-9) and IL-22, two cytokines discovered in our lab. In addition to my Ludwig research activities, I am a Professor at the University of Louvain Medical School, where I am teaching Immunology and Cell Biology. I am serving on different national and international scientific committees and Editorial boards and I am a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine. Education MD (1988) and PhD (1994), Université catholique de Louvain, Brussels, Belgium Fellowships: Research Fellow and post-doctoral Fellow with the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) Achievements Wivine and Jacques Allard-Janssen Award, Belgium, 2012 Pfizer Award, FNRS Belgium, 2008 International InBev-Baillet-Latour Health Prize, 2000 Young Investigator Award, International Cytokine Society, 1999 Maggy and Robert de Hovre Award in Immunology (Fondation Maggy et Robert de Hovre, Brussels, Belgium), 1999 Fernand de Waele Award, FNRS Belgium, 1997
