Biography

 Dr. Cecil B. Pickett, Ph.D., has been Scientific Advisor to the Board of Directors at GVK Biosciences Private Limited since December 2009. Dr. Pickett has been the President of Research & Development at Biogen Idec Ma Inc. since September 2006. Dr. Pickett serves as the President of New Jersey Performing Arts Center Corporation. He served as the President of Research & Development at Biogen Idec Inc., from September 2006 to March 12, 2009. He joined Biogen Idec from Schering-Plough Corporation, where he has held several senior R&D positions since 1993. Dr. Pickett served as the President of Schering-Plough Research Institute, the pharmaceutical research arm of Schering-Plough Corporation from March 2002 to September 1, 2006, where he helped took several large and small molecule candidates into its clinical development pipeline. He served as a Senior Vice President of Schering-Plough Corporation from 2004 to September 1, 2006 and as its Vice President since 2002. He served as an Executive Vice President of Discovery Research Institute from 1993 to 2002. Dr. Pickett joined Schering-Plough Research Institute in 1993 and served as an Executive Vice President of Discovery Research. Prior to Schering-Plough Research Institute, he served as Senior Vice President of Basic Research at Merck Research Laboratories, Montreal, Canada and West Point, PA. During his 15-year employment at Merck & Co., he held various positions of increasing responsibility, including Research Fellow of biochemical regulation, Associate Director of Molecular Pharmacology and Biochemistry, Director of Molecular Pharmacology and Biochemistry, Executive Director of Research at Merck Frosst Center for Therapeutic Research, Montreal and Vice President of the Center. He has been an Independent Director at Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc. since March 13, 2008 and Biogen Idec Ma Inc., since September 2006. Dr. Pickett serves as a Director of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Corporation. He serves as Member of Council of Scientific Advisors at Translational Genomics Research Institute. He served as Director of Biogen Idec Inc. from September 2006 to October 2009. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1993 and is a Member of The American Society for Cell Biology, American Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, the Institute of Medicine Forum on Drug Discovery Development and Translation, American Association for Cancer Research and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Pickett is a Member of the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Science Board, the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and The National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine. He has been Distinguished Lecturer at Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, UCLA since 1995. He has been published extensively in leading research journals and has been a frequent Speaker at scientific symposia and conferences. Dr. Pickett has received several major academic awards, appointments and fellowships and serves on a number of scientific committees and editorial boards of medical journals and research organizations. His awards and honors include the UCLA Alumni Association Award for Scholarly Achievement and Academic Distinction in 1976, Macy Scholar, Marine Biological Laboratories, Woods Hole Mass., in 1978, first Robert A. Scala Award and Lectureship in Toxicology of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1993 and the CIIT Centers for Health Research Founders' Award in 2001. Dr. Pickett holds a BS in Biology from California State University, Hayward, Calif and holds a Ph.D in Cell Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
