Biography

Ludwig Cancer Research is a global community of leading scientists pursuing innovative ways to prevent and control cancer. From basic research to clinical trials, in individual laboratories or as part of international teams, our researchers are tackling the hardest questions, spotting the connections and the possibilities. At Ludwig, we test our work against the one measure that matters — improving human health. Research Intrest

I am a molecular and cell biologist with special expertise in signal transduction and cell differentiation. I study these biological processes in the context of cancer and try to understand how tumor cells alter their behavior using signal transduction pathways and eliciting changes in their differentiation. This approach generates significant opportunities to generate new methods of treating cancers, collectively called differentiation therapy. Since my doctoral studies, I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, including a definitive book on TGFβ and its roles in human disease. I am a member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and am a faculty member in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University. My major activities involve training of young scientists in the laboratory, teaching Biochemistry and Cancer Biology at Uppsala University and reviewing: a) scientific publications in many journals (in three as member of the Editorial board); b) research grants for national and international agencies; and c) the career development of international scientists.  Education PhD, Genetics, University of Minnesota, USA, 1991 BSc, Biology, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece, 1985 Achievements National Fellowship Foundation, University Excellence Fellowship, Greece, 1981-85 Institute of Human Genetics Graduate Fellowship, University of Minnesota, USA, 1985-86 Alexander Onassis Foundation Fellowship, Greece, 1986-88 Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship, University of Minnesota, USA, 1989-90 The Anna Fuller Fund Post-doctoral Fellowship, USA, 1991-93 Top-Ten Graduate Award, Biology Department 30-year celebration, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece, 2003 Best reviewer of the year 2008, Swedish Research Council Evaluation Panels, 2008 Senior Investigator Award, Swedish Cancer Society, 2010 Docent, Medical Biochemistry, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Uppsala University, 2011
