Yoko Kanemasu is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and the Deputy Head of the School of Social Sciences. She is originally from Japan but has lived in Fiji for over 16 years. Yoko is a graduate of USP (MA in Sociology) and obtained her PhD in Sociology from the University of New South Wales in Australia in 2005. She was previously a Research Associate at Cardiff University in Wales, UK, and Lecturer in Social Theory at the University of Worcester in England. But her true passion is working with Pacific island students. Yoko is also a rugby fan/researcher and was a key convenor of Fiji Rugby Centenary Conference: Reflections on the Past, Present and Future held at the University of the South Pacific in 2013.
Yoko’s research areas include the politics of representation, tourism, identity, sport, migration, and rural development.
