Terry Jernigan is Professor of Cognitive Science, Psychiatry, and Radiology at UC San Diego. She earned a bachelors degree at UC Irvine, a PhD at UC Los Angeles, and interned and conducted post-doctoral research at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA Medical Center before joining the faculty at UC San Diego in 1984. Since the late 1970’s she has been an active researcher, using biomedical imaging to study the human brain. She has conducted studies of brain development and aging, neurodevelopmental disorders in children, neuropsychiatric and substance use disorders in young adults, and neurodegenerative disorders. She currently serves as Director, UCSD Center for Human Development, where she works with an interdisciplinary team conducting research focused on the factors that influence behavioral and brain development in children. She is principal investigator or co-investigator on a number of research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Lundbeck Foundation.
