He is chair of the Department of Bioengineering and director of UC San Diego’s Bioinformatics and Computational Biology graduate program, and adjunct professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and is recipient of Smithsonian Foundation and Association of Laboratory Automatics Awards.
