Professor H. Kayang did his B.Sc. (1985) from St Anthony College, Shillong, M. Sc (1988) and Ph. D (1993) degree in Botany from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya. He joined the Department of Botany as a Lecturer in the year 1997, Reader in the year 2006 and as Professor in the year 2012. Since the inception of his lectureship, Prof Kayang has been actively involved in research in soil microbiology, microbial diversity, biodiversity conservation.

His area of interest is on inventorisation and creation of data base for micro and macro-fungi of northeast India, the impact of coal mining activities on soil microbial diversity in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, Application of Mycorrhiza in agricultural crop and forestry and his research activities also extent to initiate research directives in the new concept of microbial inoculants for improved plant performance.
