From 1981 to 1990 he was an Associate Professor of Urology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Chief of Urology at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center. He has studied bladder pain syndrome both from a basic science and clinical perspective. He is co-chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Interstitial Cystitis Association and on the executive board of the International Society for the Study of Bladder Pain Syndrome (ESSIC). He is the Chair of the Bladder Pain Syndrome Guideline Committee of the American Urological Association.
