Michael Loebinger is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute and a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Dr Loebinger undertook his preclinical studies at Cambridge University gaining a First Class Honours in Medical Sciences followed by study at Oxford University for his clinical studies. He was then awarded a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship in 2006 for studies into the use of adult stem cells in lung disease. This resulted in research published in his PhD, which he was awarded by University College London. His current research aims focus around chronic lung infections, in particular idiopathic bronchiectasis and aspergillus, pseudomonas and non-tuberculosis mycobacterial infections. Dr Loebinger is presently investigating host susceptibility to these infections, in addition to the development of biomarkers to assist in the management of these conditions. He is also involved in establishing national and international clinical networks of patients with chronic lung diseases which will help with patient management as well as future research and clinical trials. Dr Loebinger has won young investigator of the year awards from the Royal Society of Medicine, the European Respiratory Society, the British Thoracic Society and the British Association of Lung Research. He has also received prestigious awards from the American Thoracic Society, the Medical Research Society and the British Lung Foundation.
