Biography

Marleen de Ruiter is a PhD at the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She has a background in Environmental and Resource Management from the University of British Columbia (Canada) specializing in disaster vulnerability and post-disaster recovery. Her MSc thesis focused on measuring post-disaster coastal-community recovery and included a case study of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Currently, Marleen de Ruiter is working on measuring the impacts of disaster mitigation measures on earthquake and flood vulnerability. This project aims to improve understanding of spatiotemporal trends in earthquake and flood vulnerability and will include case studies of Ethiopia and Tanzania.

Research Intrest

Post-disaster recovery, risk and vulnerability assessments, vulnerability curves, extreme weather inusrance schemes.
