I teach on a number of undergraduate programmes within the department of Biomedical Sciences including Healthcare Science (Life Sciences), Biomedical Science and Biomedical Sciences (Health, Exercise and Nutrition). In addition I teach on the MSc Biomedical Science programme that we deliver within the department. Modules I deliver include: Professional studies, Principles and practices of Blood Science, Contemporary topics in Healthcare Science, Pathophysiology of disease, Medical Biochemistry, Biology and Laboratory Investigation of Disease as well as specialism modules in blood science. In addition I offer both undergraduate and masters level student projects in my specialist subject area of medical biochemistry. I am currently the programme director for the BSc Healthcare Science (Life sciences) programme here at Cardiff Metropolitan University. This programme is the only one of its kind in Wales and incorporates periods of NHS laboratory placements in each year of study.
During my PhD I investigated the role of the dietary lipid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) specifically looking at its involvement in the development of the long term complications of type two diabetes mellitus and other inflammatory disorders. I predominantly worked with the cultured cell lines THP-1 (monocytes) and HUVEC (endothelial). During this project I utilised a number of laboratory methodologies, with the main focus being on the use of Real-Time PCR to ascertain changes in genes relevant to type two diabetes mellitus and its long term complications.
