With a professional history as a sportswriter, copy editor, digital editor, and producer, Jason Brown came to Valdosta State to be a part of the state’s growing film community. He earned an MA in Screenwriting and Film Studies at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA and then an MFA in Film & Video Production at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Along with screening his own films, he has worked as everything from the Festival Director, board member, screener, presenter to ticket-taker at film festivals in Georgia and beyond. Currently, he helps run the South Georgia Film Festival with the students of the Film & Video Society. He volunteers with the Valdosta-Lowndes Film Initiative, made up of members of the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Authority and Industrial Authority, the group looks to educate the community and improve the infrastructure to bring more film productions to the area. He produced the short film MIRACLE BOY, which premiered at the Venice (Italy) Film Festival, won several awards and eventually screened nationally on Comcast’s “Film Festival Collective†channel. His thesis film THEM THAT WORK, about the impact of John Sayles’ film MATEWAN, won several production grants and is being made into a feature documentary. He has worked on such television shows as WORLD’S SCARIEST PLACES, HOME BLITZ and AMERICAN IDOL, and produces the show VOD INDIE, about independent filmmaking, with his students. His students have gone to the Macon Film Festival as part of his classes, produced work for the local Chamber of Commerce, and had their work be accepted to regional film festivals. He focuses on connecting students to the community through service.
