Biography

"Fengjiao earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in her home country of China, next making a move to the U.S. to earn a Master of Science in mathematics at Georgia Southern University. Interested in statistical genetics, Fengjiao found that her future mentor, Dr. Varghese George, performed his research in that area, making Augusta University a perfect match for her and her aspirations. Fengjiao explained that her research interests are motivated by a desire to discover solutions for real world problems. Her dissertation research is developing statistical methods for detecting differentially methylated regions (DMR). She explained that genomic researchers are interested in DNA methylation that is altered in disease since epigenetic changes may be susceptible to modification by environmental factors. She also works as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Augusta University Cancer Center, which she said has helped her immensely."
