Associate Professor Michael Cheung has practiced paediatric cardiology for more than 15 years. He has trained at world-leading congenital cardiac centres including Great Ormond Street and Royal Brompton Hospital in London, Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. He was appointed Director of Paediatric Cardiology in Melbourne and leader of the Heart Research Group at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in September 2011 and remains in these positions. He is also head of echocardiography and cardiac MRI. He has been a full time clinician while also undertaking research supported by the Canadian Heart Foundation from 2002 to 2004 for his MD thesis and a Heart Foundation Fellowship from 2008 to 2010. Associate Professor Cheung has published more than 70 peer reviewed manuscripts and written six book chapters with another in press. The Heart Research group he leads includes seven senior researchers and five postgraduate fellows. He has established a research lab for echocardiography and vascular ultrasound, with four laboratory research assistants. There is significant experience and ongoing studies in molecular cardiology, in vitro cardiac assessment and also invasive assessments of cardiac function in animal models.
