Carlo Catapano obtained his MD degree in 1983 from the University of Naples, Italy. From 1983 to 1988 he trained in medical oncology at the University of Naples and pharmacology at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy. From 1988 he worked at the Comprehensive Cancer Center and in the Department of Biochemistry of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, USA, where he received the PhD in Biochemistry. Since 1993 he held faculty appointments in the Departments of Experimental Oncology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Medicine (Hematology/Oncology Division) of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, USA. During this time he was also a senior investigator of the Hollings Cancer Center, the Center for Molecular and Structural Biology, and the Laboratory of Cancer Genomic of the MUSC. He is currently the director of the Laboratory of Experimental Oncology of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI).
My group works at a number of projects in the areas of experimental therapeutics, molecular pharmacology, and development of molecular- and gene- targeted therapeutics. The group participates also to clinical and translational studies on new cancer drugs in close collaboration with the clinical research teams of the IOSI and SENDO.
