Anthony (Tony) is also a Reader in Social Policy and Development in the Department of Social Policy, London School of Economics and Political Science. Tony teaches courses in social policy, rural development and basic education. He has been undertaking research on conservation and sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon for several years. Before joining LSE in 1983, Tony worked as country director for Oxfam in Brazil (1977-81) and as a research officer at Reading University (1981-82). He has undertaken extensive consultancy work on social and environmental issues for the World Bank, UNDP, EU and DfID (Brazil, Indonesia, Philippines, Mozambique, Angola). He spent two years at the World Bank in Washington DC (2003-05) on leave from LSE as Lead Social Development Specialist for Latin America. Tony is a regular contributor to the Brazil service of the BBC World Service. Tony has a BA Sociology from Sheffield University and an MPhil in Latin American Studies and a PhD from Glasgow University.
