I completed my Bachelor of Nursing in Manchester in 1997, and initially worked in intensive care. I later moved into community nursing, working as a qualified District Nurse in Manchester, Cheltenham and Milton Keynes. Whilst in Manchester, I completed my Masters in Applied Social Research – exploring the invisible role of District Nurses in palliative care. Throughout my clinical career I have enjoyed teaching and mentoring students. I therefore embraced the opportunity to extend my educational role, qualifying as a teacher in 2004, and working as a Practice Educator with pre and post registration students. Through a subsequent practitioner/management role, I enhanced my skills, qualifying as an Independent Prescriber. Then as a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist for 6 years, I was able to combine my teaching, leadership, research and practitioner roles with my earlier passion for palliative care – developing an End of Life Competency programme for community nurses and conducting clinical audits and care reviews.
