I am currently undertaking my PgCTHE within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specifically in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. I currently help deliver microbiology lectures at levels 4 and 5, practical classes at level 5, and supervisor level 6 final year undergraduate projects. Modules I am involved with: Principles & Practice of Infection Science podiatric Medicine
I am currently funded by the Hodge Foundation (previously Jane Hodge Foundation) looking into the treatment of opportunistic pathogens associated with pulmonary disease, more specifically those that persist to form chronic infections of the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung. Using manuka honey alone, and in combination with a range of therapeutic agents, we have shown excellent inhibitory efficacy against a range of CF pathogens, such as; Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Achromobacter, and Staphylococcus to name but a few of the genera studied. Previous research has focussed on the conflict and cooperation of bacterial cells in mixed communities, the diversity of cells from a seemingly clonal population, and the spatial structure of small bacterial aggregates, and larger biofilms. Further to this, I have extensively the mechanistic effects of manuka honey on P. aeruginosa growth, virulence, and biofilm formation.
