Alastair Ross is an assistant professor in nutritional metabolomics. His main areas of research interest include the effect of diet on metabolism, measuring dietary intake using biomarkers, and whole grains and health. Currently his work is focused on setting up a nutritional metabolomics platform at Chalmers, optimising current metabolomics methodologies for application in nutrition studies.Metabolomics, the simultaneous measurement of many metabolites in a biological sample, is a powerful tool to help broaden understanding of how biological systems respond to different triggers. Alastair’s lab also analyses plasma alkylresorcinols, which function as non-subjective biomarkers of whole grain wheat and rye intake. These can be used to estimate whole grain intake in a population, or check compliance in dietary intervention studies.
