Aimilios Michael, Architect Engineer Dipl.Arch.Eng., M.Sc., Ph.D., is a Lecturer in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus, Director of Energy & Environmental Design of Buildings Research Laboratory (E&EDB) and Director of the Inter-departmental Master Programme, Energy Technology and Sustainable Design of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus. Before assuming his current position, he was an Adjunct Faculty Member, Visiting Lecturer and Main Research Associate in the Department of Architecture at the UCY, from 2006 until 2013 and Part Time Faculty Member in the Department of Architecture at Frederic University from 2009 until 2012. Aimilios Michael holds a PhD in Environmental Design and Energy in Architecture from the Department of Architectural Technology, School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, NTUA. During his studies, he was awarded numerous academic performance distinctions, including the Academic Excellence NTUA Award 2004, NTUA Silver Medal 2004 (1st rank), Best Design Diploma Thesis NTUA Award 2004 and Nomination for Best Doctoral Dissertation Award NTUA 2011. He was also awarded numerous academic scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies, including the Academic Excellence Annual Scholarships from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation from 1999 until 2004, the Eugenides Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship 2005-2006, the Doctoral Studies Scholarship in Architecture and Environment from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation 2005-2009 and the Doctoral Studies Scholarship from the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation 2006-2010. His research activities take on an interdisciplinary perspective and they focus on the areas of Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings and Advanced Architectural Technology. His research priorities include Integrated Architectural Design & Technology, Energy & Environmental Design of Buildings on Contemporary and Vernacular Architecture, Adaptable Building Envelope Design, Innovative & Sustainable Construction Components and Materials. He participated as principal investigator and/or project coordinator in several research programmes funded by the European Commission, Directorate General for Research & Innovation, Research Promotion Foundation IPE-RPF, University of Cyprus and private sector. His architectural work -placing emphasis on energy and environmental architecture- has won awards (16) in architectural European and international competitions, including 1st prizes (2), and was presented in several architectural exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Aimilios Michael's design-based research has been presented and awarded in international architectural fora, including the 22nd Biennial of Industrial Design 2010, Quality Concept Award and at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2010. His research work has been published in books, refereed journals and conference proceedings. Aimilios Michael currently holds the position of Vice-President of the Cyprus Architects Association Administrative Council, CAA (2012-) and he is the CAA Representative to the International Union of Architects (UIA). He is also member of the Administrative Council of the Scientific Technical Chamber of Cyprus, CSTC (2011, 2013-) and of the Cyprus Civil Engineers and Architects Association, CCEAA (2013-). He has participated in several scientific committees, including the State Architecture Policy Committee (Chair), Specialization Committee of Architecture (Deputy Chair), Energy Policy Committee (Renewable Energy Sources, Energy and Buildings subcommittees), Environment and Sustainable Development Committee.
